SOMETIMES,
it's someone
you know

~ Violence among people who know each other can be physical, sexual, and/or emotional in nature. It can occur between people who have just met, people who have been together for awhile, and between people who are married. People of all ages, educational levels, and social backgrounds are victimized. Behaviors range from minor controlling acts to rape to physical assault.

BMEN
A Batterer's Intervention Program

Battering a partner shows a need to have power and control over that partner.

BMEN provides an alternative to
controlling a partner.

BMEN is not anger management.

Course Description:

BMEN is part of a coordinated community effort to prevent and eliminate domestic abuse. That coordination is absolutely necessary to achieve this goal. This course alone will not prevent or eliminate domestic violence, in fact a man's participation in this course may result in an increase in domestic violence unless there is an appropriate response to such violence by the entire community, including the criminal justice system.

BMEN is a twenty-six week course for men with a history of domestic violence. Participants attend weekly one and one-half hour sessions.

All participants are required to undergo a screening interview prior to their acceptance into the course. During this screening interview, they will be required to provide a variety of intake information. They will also be required to sign a Release of Information for the referral source and the appropriate justice system agencies. Participants will also be required to identify all past and current partners and allow BMEN to contact such partners regarding the individual's participation in the course and the availability of support services for the partner(s).

Supervision

BMEN is a Batterer's Intervention Program. Staff in the program are directly supervised by Services to Aid Families (SAF), a division of Oswego County Opportunities, Inc.

SAF is a licensed domestic violence program serving Oswego County. It supports the activities of the Domestic Violence Coalition of Oswego County (DVCOC), which monitors the activities of BMEN.

Course Hours:

Screenings - These appointments serve as an orientation to the BMEN program. They are scheduled with a group facilitator, after telephone contact in the Fulton area.

Groups:

As scheduled, after attending a successful screening appointment.

Referrals:

Referral for this course can be made by:
  • the individual
  • a family member
  • local community agencies
  • the legal system
  • anyone else with knowledge of the situation
However, the individual referred must personally make contact with the program to schedule a screening interview.

Payment for Services:

Participants are required to make weekly payments in accordance with a sliding fee scale based on family income and expenses.

Course Repeats:

Part participants will only be allowed to repeat BMEN on the specific recommendations of the appropriate referral agency and then only after an individual case review by BMEN staff.
