among people who know each other can be physical, sexual, and/or emotional
in nature. It can occur between people who have just met, people who have
been together for awhile, and between people who are married. People of
all ages, educational levels, and social backgrounds are victimized. Behaviors
range from minor controlling acts to rape to physical assault

Crime
Victim Compensation
If
you are the victim of or witness to a crime, including domestic violence,
you may be eligible for help. You can receive compensation to pay
for your medical expenses, counseling, transportation, shelter stay,
and other out of pocket expenses.
The New
York State Crime Victims Board could provide compensation or reimbursement
to you or your family if you have experienced a crime. To receive
Crime Victims Compensation, a victim must apply to the New York State
Crime Victims Board by calling 1-800-247-8035. This number is toll-free
and accessible 24 hours a day.
- You
have physical injuries due to being a victim of a crime
- You
have burial expenses for someone who has died as a direct result
of a crime
- You
are over 60 years of age or are a disabled victim of a crime
- You
are under age 18 and are a victim or a witness to a crime
- You
are the parent, guardian, or sibling of a child victim
- You
have suffered the loss of or damage to personal
property as a result of a crime
Assistance
in applying for New York State Compensation Funds is available through
SAF's Crime Victims Program. Also, the program can help deal with
the confusion or emotional stress you may be feeling.

The
SAF House provides. in Oswego County, a safe, confidential shelter
to women and their children who have experienced domestic violence
SAF's
Crime Victims Program
SAF
works with men, women, and children who survive domestic violence,
sexual assault, sexual harassment, elder abuse, child sexual abuse,
or other violent crimes.
Trained
counselors are on call 24 hours a day to help people from many different
backgrounds. SAF Counselors are caring people with valuable knowledge
and experience who can help you in a time of crisis.

Go
to the police station with you, if you choose to report the crime

Go
to court with you/or to meetings with the District Attorney

Meet
with you for short term, individual counseling.

Give
you information about other community resources that can help you

Go
to the hospital with you to give emotional support during medical
treatment and/or evidence collection, if you are a sexual assault
survivor
