SOMETIMES,
it's someone
you know

~ Violence among people who know each other can be physical, sexual, and/or emotional in nature. It can occur between people who have just met, people who have been together for awhile, and between people who are married. People of all ages, educational levels, and social backgrounds are victimized. Behaviors range from minor controlling acts to rape & physical assault.

Maybe a Safety Plan could help you.

Safety Issues:

  • Let friends, neighbors, and family know what is going on
  • Have secret code words or escape plans with supportive people
  • Alert your local law enforcement of the situation

LONG TERM:
Safety Plan can include an escape bag containing:

  • Orders of Protection
  • Paternity documents
  • Birth Certificates
  • Marriage, separation or divorce papers
  • Money
  • Credit cards and account numbers
  • Driver's license
  • Public Assistance Benefit Card
  • Lease/rental agreement, house deed
  • Insurance papers
  • Custody papers
Personal Things:
  • Several changes of clothes
  • Child's favorite toy
  • Medications
  • Address book

SAFETY PLANNING:

Call 911 if you are in immediate danger

Call the Abuse and Assault Hotline at 342-1600 (24 hours a day, collect calls accepted within Oswego County.)

Make sure family, friends, and co-workers know about the situation and know what to do if the abuser should show up

If you or your children are protected by an Order of Protection, be sure that a copy is on file with your local police agency. Also, it is important to carry a copy with you so that you can show it to a police officer if needed.

Sample Safety Plan:

~ Important: 911 (Police)
~ Abuse and Assault Hotline- 342-1600
~ Supportive People:
........Friend @ 555-1234
........Aunt Mary - 555-1235
........Grandma - 555-1236
~ SAF House - 342-1600
~ On Foot: Neighbor

~ With a car: Grocery store (24 hour)

~ Code words or system when in DANGER:
My secret word with my children and neighbors is "orange" I will bang on the pipes three times when I need the police to be called because I am being hurt.

~ My medications are:
Asthma medication, allergy medicine, birth control, etc.

My important items are: birth certificates, paternity papers, driver's license, bank books, orders of protection, keys, money, social security cards, appointment cards, etc.

My children's needs are: medicine, favorite toy, special formula, etc.

Important Questions to Ask Yourself:

~ Where can you keep important phone numbers for yourself and your children?

~ Is there anyone you can ask to call the police if they hear suspicious noises coming from your house or apartment?

~
If you need to get out of your house or apartment in a hurry, what door, window, elevator or stairwell will you be able to use in order to get out safely?

~ If you need a place to stay for a while, where can you go?

~ Can you arrange to stay with family or friends in a crisis?

~ Do your children know how to remain safe during a violent episode: (ie: do not hide under the bed or in the closet, call 911 or safe adult, leave the house)?

~ Is there a code word you can use with friends, family, and/or your children to alert them to call for help?

~ Where can you keep your purse, car keys and some change to make a phone call so that you can grab them quickly?

~ Can you keep some money, some changes of clothes and important papers hidden somewhere your partner doesn't know about, but that you can get to quickly?

~ If you think you and your partner are about to have an argument, how can you get to a room where there are fewer things that can be used as weapons?
